This course will attempt to provide a survey of the literature of the United States from Colonial Times down to the twentieth century. It will discuss a selection of works in their historical context, noting for example the impact of puritanism, the Revolution, the Civil War, the Depression and the two World Wars and how these and other historical factors created and developed literary expression. In adition to the historical background in which poetry, fiction and drama emerged, special emphasis will be placed on the analysis of distinctive major themes in American experience and their literary expression (space, isolation, self-reliance, puritanism, etc). | A2 A14 A15 A16 |
