This subject introduces the literatures written in English from countries that had belonged to the British Empire. To situate the students vis-à-vis other literatures, the concepts of colonial and post-colonial are discussed. There is also reference to the nationalist movements which influenced the origin of their respective national literatures. Attention is called to the need to adopt a new critical perspective based on the knowledge of points of view different from the Western ones. Information is given about a number of possible theoretical approaches such as the postcolonial theory. The origins of the different literatures are studied as well as the initial influences, the development of their unique traditions and the main themes and most relevant authors of each of those traditions. Finally, attention will be paid to the changes that these literatures are undergoing at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
