The goal of this module is to offer an introduction to study of pragmatics with emphasis on actual examples of language use in different contexts. We will explore the core issues in pragmatics and those aspects of the meaning of utterances which cannot be accounted for by semantics alone. We will discuss speech acts, presupposition, implicatures, contextually-mediated reference, politeness, and aspects of the acquisition of pragmatics in the first/foreign language. By the end of this module, you will have an enhanced understanding of core themes within pragmatics, with special emphasis to teaching and learning pragmatics in an EFL context. This subject combines face-to-face and blended learning in a percentage that has yet to be confirmed. When the academic year starts, the calendar with all of the planned teaching activities (with timetables and classrooms) will be available from the Moodle online campus for each subject.
